Save The Knolls
T-shirt is Here!

In 2004 we all wore red shirts to the Board of Supervisors meeting where we successfully deterred a high density re-zoning attempt. In bright red, this t-shirt is a must-have for all Knolls residents— especially when we go to future county meetings about re-zoning issues this fall. You can purchase your shirt at Save The Knolls T-Shirt

Don't wait to the last minute, these shirts take two to three weeks to deliver! Of course, these t-shirts are not required attire, but they are cool!

UPDATE—Colton Lee Development

Ventura County Planning gave us a tentative date of August 1, 2013 as the new date for the Planning Commission Meeting. This date is tentative because they are finalizing their info and making sure that there is no conflict with the City of Simi Valley. The meeting is still planned to happen in the City of Simi Valley’s Council Chamber at City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road. We will send out more info once the date is confirmed.

There will be a community meeting prior to the Planning Commission meeting. We will send out an email notice and put up signs. Please come to the pre-meeting. We will be discussing what will be happening at the meeting and about what residents should focus on when addressing the Commission during the public comment period.

We WILL need everyone to attend the meeting – whether you make a public comment or not! If we do not ALL show up for the meeting then the Planning Commission will wrongly assume that this development is ok with us! Stay tuned. We will keep you all informed—watch for emails and signs posted in the neighborhood.

UPDATE—Katherine Road ‘walk’

The Katherine Road walk with Supervisor Foy is to be scheduled after the Planning Commission Meeting and before the Board of Supervisors Meeting. More info to come.

Ventura County Sheriff's Office

There was discussion at the June HOA meeting about vehicles speeding on Katherine Road. Sheriff Dan Vanover says that he will contact the CHP. With both the CHP and Ventura County Sheriff agencies involved, they may be able to step up patrols in the area. He also said that if there is a known repeat offender he could pay them a visit and discuss the issue. You can email Sheriff Dan Vanover at daniel.vanover@ventura.org.  The non-emergency number for the Ventura County Sheriff is (805) 654-9511.

Another option would be to contact the county regarding speed bumps, but it is doubtful that we get the high volume of vehicle trips to qualify. The county's public works roads department is the entity to contact to gain further information if anyone is interested in getting additional information.

It's a wild, wonderful world in the Knolls

Great varieties of wildlife species share our Susana Knolls neighborhood. The abundance of oak trees, the natural rock outcroppings, grassy hillsides, and lack of streetlights and sidewalks create a unique and wonderful ecosystem. Scores of native and migratory bird species, various species of owls, lizards, snakes, frogs, toads, salamanders, insects, and all kinds of mammals live among us in the Knolls.

With this circle of life around us comes the opportunity to learn about and appreciate our wild neighbors. We need only step out our front doors to see the birds that grace our trees or the lizards on the ground that keep the insect population in check. Daily, birds build nests in oak tree cavities and tree branches, snakes hunt for rodents and other reptiles in grassy and rocky areas, roadrunners hunt for snakes and lizards, soaring hawks hunt for reptiles, rabbits and sometimes other birds and tiny bats who shelter in caves or rooflines hunt for insects at night.

Future articles in this series will spotlight our local wildlife, large and small. We are so fortunate to live on the edge of a wild open space and experience such a deep connection to the living earth. We encorage you to take the time to see the tremendous variety of birds, squirrels and rabbits searching for food, or the lizards catching spiders. Listen to the owls and coyotes hunting at night, and thank your lucky stars that we have a place like this to call home!

It’s a Neighborhood Newsletter –

What do you want to see?

Does anyone have any input for the newsletter? We want to hear from you about what content you’d like to see. We want your ideas and articles. Send an email to SusanaKnollsHOA@roadrunner.com. We got some feedback at the June HOA meeting and will be incorporating suggestions as we have space.

Help us keep the Knolls Informed

The HOA does not have contact info for the majority of the neighborhood. It would be helpful if you would talk to your neighbors about sending us their email address so we can add them to our neighborhood list. We keep the list private (really!) and do not share the email addresses with anyone. We also only send out information about the neighborhood – no spam. If anyone wants to join the list and receive this newsletter and other information about the neighborhood have them send an email to SusanaKnollsHoa@roadrunner.com.

Susana Knolls HOA Meetings

Susana Knolls HOA meetings are held every other month, on the First Tuesday of that month at 7:00 at the Depot. Join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, August 6, 2013. See you there!

Fire Season

On June 1st, fire season in Southern California began. For those of us who live in the wildland-urban interface like the Knolls it is always a smart choice to be as prepared as you can be. Fortunately the County of Ventura provides very valuable and helpful information on preparing for fire season through their Ready Ventura County website. Please visit the site and help yourself get prepared.

New Search Function on SaveTheKnolls web site

The Archive link on the website now has a search function where you will be able to find past articles pertaining to the Knolls. The search library is currently incomplete, but we will soon be adding all the past articles—a wealth of information which should give any planning commission pause in their dealings with the Knolls.
